Harbour Master
Harbour Masters
Worldwide there are approximately 3,000 merchant ports and the work of the Harbour Master can vary widely from country to country and from port to port even within the same country.
IMO reported at the end of October that it will be present at COP 27, the UN climate conference which is now underway in Egypt. It opened on 6 November and will close on 18 November.
Shipping is vital for mankind
It is reported that IMO will highlight the fact that international shipping is indispensable to the world and is a vital industry to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the global energy transition.
Following the 2nd IMO Symposium on alternative low- and zero-carbon fuels for shipping1 in October 2022, focusing on Ensuring a just and inclusive transition to low-carbon shipping, IMO will co-host a side event here: Producing future marine fuels: opportunities for renewable energy production in developing countries on 10 November.
It is understood that this side-event will be attended by IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim. It is to be co-hosted by IMO, UNCTAD, IRENA (www.irena.org ) and World Bank. There is an introductory video to the topics to be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYAjvd4JKxc 2

Addressing GHG emissions
As its track record to date so clearly demonstrates, IMO is the appropriate international body to continue work to address GHG emissions from ships engaged in international trade.
The latest measures adopted by IMO to address shipping's energy efficiency entered into force on 1 November 2022 – read more here on the CII and EEXI regulations here: https://www.imo.org/en/MediaCentre/PressBriefings/pages/CII-and-EEXI-entry-into-force.aspx
