Worldwide there are approximately 3,000 merchant ports and the work of the Harbour Master can vary widely from country to country and from port to port even within the same country.

Enhancing Safety and Sustainability at Belfast Harbour Marina – Experience from Port-Safety
In 2019, Belfast Harbour Marina — located next to the Titanic Museum — initiated a project to enhance waterfront safety. After careful evaluation of the challenges faced by harbour environments, including corrosion of traditional metal ladders and limited visibility for rescue operations, the marina chose to install Port-Safety’s LifeLadder® solution.
Several years later, the LifeLadders installed at Belfast continue to demonstrate resilience and effectiveness. Their visible yellow design remains prominent, providing reliable access from the water to the quay wall, and supporting the marina's broader safety initiatives.

Addressing Real-World Challenges
Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental fatalities in waterfront environments. Conventional steel ladders, while historically standard, often degrade quickly in harsh marine conditions, compromising their reliability just when they are most needed. Visibility can also become an issue, especially in low-light conditions or adverse weather.
The LifeLadder® system was developed to address these issues directly. Manufactured from durable, non-corrosive materials, and designed in modular sections for easy maintenance and replacement, LifeLadder® ensures that critical escape routes are both functional and highly visible over time.
At Belfast Harbour Marina, the ladders have performed as intended, requiring minimal maintenance despite constant exposure to tide, saltwater, and weather changes. The installation has enhanced overall harbour safety without significant ongoing operational burden.
LifeLadder® remains highly visible after years of use.
Continued Development: Introducing LifeLadder Thor®
Since 2019, Port-Safety has continued to develop and refine the LifeLadder concept. The result is LifeLadder Thor®, an evolution of the original design with further practical enhancements:

Quantifying the Environmental Impact
Choosing LifeLadder Thor® instead of traditional steel ladders does not just enhance safety — it also contributes to sustainability goals. Based on current project data, Port-Safety estimates that LifeLadder Thor® installations contributed to saving 426 tons of CO₂ emissions between 2023 and 2024 compared to conventional alternatives.
Lessons from Belfast Harbour Marina
The experience at Belfast Harbour Marina illustrates that investing in long-term safety infrastructure delivers tangible benefits. LifeLadder® provided a low-maintenance, high-visibility solution that continues to function reliably years after installation. The approach taken by Belfast Harbour — proactively addressing known risks with proven technologies — offers a model for other harbours and marinas seeking to improve safety outcomes without adding unnecessary operational complexity.
With the development of LifeLadder Thor®, harbours have access to an even more capable tool for protecting users and supporting environmental objectives.
