Worldwide there are approximately 3,000 merchant ports and the work of the Harbour Master can vary widely from country to country and from port to port even within the same country.
The International Harbour Masters’ Association (IHMA) records its profound sadness at news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
IHMA President Captain Paul O’Regan said: ‘It was with much regret that we learned of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 8 September.
‘On behalf of our Members around the globe and our part of the huge global shipping community we pay tribute to Her Majesty’s lifetime of dedication and inspiration.’
He added: ‘We mourn Her Majesty’s passing and extend our sincere condolences to the Royal Family.’
For over 70 years Queen Elizabeth showed a deep commitment to service and duty to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. She was Head of State of nations which provide strong membership of IHMA.
She came from a long line of sailor kings and was totally aware of the importance of the sea, of seafarers and their lot. She was patron of a number of seafarers’ charities.
It will be recalled that her daughter, HRH The Princess Royal, addressed our Eleventh Congress, held in 2018 in London.
The International Harbour Masters’ Association’s secretariat is based in England.
Members of the Association contribute to preparation of a regulatory framework for the shipping industry created at the London-based International Maritime Organization (IMO) where IHMA enjoys Observer status.
